Following a fitness assessment, Coach Neely leads the group in a forty-minute invigorating workout. Weekly sessions included workouts, nutrition counseling, health, wellness, and meditation coaching, and interactive gardening activities.
Fighting Back Against Non-Communicable Diseases: H.E.L.P. Is Here
Non-communicable diseases (NCDs)—including diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and certain cancers—are silently devastating Bahamian families. In The Bahamas, NCDs account for approximately 7 out of every 10 deaths. According to the Ministry of Health, more than 30% of Bahamians are living with high blood pressure, and over 13% suffer from diabetes, rates significantly higher than many regional and global averages. These chronic illnesses are claiming lives too soon and placing immense pressure on families, communities, and the national healthcare system.
In week one, participants took a deep dive at the grocery store to read and understand food labels and ingredients, led by Justice Brown, Wellness Program Director at Bahamas Wellness.
In response to this alarming trend, OEF in partnership with Bahamas Wellness, launched the Eleuthera Health Enhancement Lifestyle Program (H.E.L.P.) in April. This 8-week community-based wellness initiative is designed to empower individuals to take control of their health through practical tools, education, and support, and was made available to all residents of Eleuthera seeking to make lasting lifestyle changes. To ensure one-on-one attention and personalized coaching, each cohort consists of 12 participants.
This holistic health enhancement program provided participants with free health screenings, nutrition education, personalized coaching, meal preparation workshops, and guided exercise and meditation sessions—all delivered in a welcoming, group-based environment that fosters accountability, encouragement, and a sense of community. For those looking to lose weight, lower blood pressure, reduce sugar intake, or feel more energized, this program provided a clear and supported path.
Anshena Johnson, Chief Program Officer, provides H.E.L.P. participants with a delicious salad made from nutritious greens freshly harvested from the CTI farm.
But H.E.L.P. is not just about individual change—it’s about community transformation. Each participant becomes a ripple in a wider wave of wellness. Healthier individuals mean stronger families, a more productive workforce, and a brighter future reclaimed from the grip of noncommunicable diseases. With your support, we look forward to continuing and expanding this program on Eleuthera as we create a pathway to holistic lifestyle change and better health outcomes.
