ELEUTHERA

small island BIG future

“Founded” in 1636, Eleuthera draws its name from the group of English Puritans who first landed on the island (called “Cigatoo” by the natives) nearly 400 years ago. They called themselves “The Eleutheran Adventures” – Eleuthera comes from the Greek word for “freedom” – as they came to the New World seeking religious freedom.

This journey toward freedom has been a central theme for Eleutherans ever since. Today, Eleutherans like all Bahamians continue to pursue the same hopes and dreams shared by our ancestors. To enjoy our land’s natural resources. To raise our families with access to education, healthcare, and opportunity. To celebrate our heritage. To own our own economy.

One Eleuthera Foundation exists, in part, to facilitate this pursuit toward freedom. Through the Shared Vision, OEF seeks to establish Eleuthera as a community development model not only for the entire country but for other small island nations challenged in similar ways. Yes, Eleuthera may be small, but we at OEF are leading the way to freedom.

Working together to own and sustain our economy

One Eleuthera Foundation

OEF was born out of a need to protect Eleuthera from large-scale development that would forever alter the landscape of our island and continue the cycle of foreign investment as a necessity for a viable future. We set out to forever change this unsustainable cycle of dependency and empower our local communities into a model of ownership and self-sufficiency. These are our islands and the time has come to educate, train, fund, and transfer knowledge on how to grow our island communities into thriving economies that ensure all Bahamians are participating, contributing, and benefiting from homegrown driven commerce. When we work together and support each other from a place of knowledge, we become ONE.
