Preserving Our Heritage

Governor's Harbour Heritage Trust

History & Purpose

The Governor’s Harbour Heritage Trust was founded in August of 2008. The organization was born out of concerns for the community of Governor’s Harbour's culture, historic architecture, and environment. Our goal is to raise funds and give oversight to the maintenance of Governor's Harbour's physical appearance and the preservation of its tangible and intangible heritage for future generations.

Activities:

Currently, the Trust is in the planning stages of a major initiative to revitalize historic Cupid’s Cay. We believe that the revitalization of this area will bring tremendous economic relief to the residents of the area, as well as to the Island of Eleuthera at large. To this end we have been in consultation with representatives from the UMass Amherst Center for Heritage and Society. Members of the faculty have begun to assist us with laying out plans to move forward. These plans will include, but not be limited to, an assessment of the architectural structures, potential archeological resources, and extant documentation of the history of the community.

Recent Accomplishments:

Most recently our group was able to begin the long awaited restoration of the historic jail house on Cupid's Cay. We are considering an adoptive use program that will facilitate the sale of arts and crafts made by Eleutherans at the site. In addition, we believe that the building could be used as the gateway to Cupid's Cay, house historical documents, and function as a mini museum. We also have been striving to maintain the ambiance of the community by organizing major clean-up campaigns.

Current Staff and Volunteers:

At this time we are strictly a volunteer organization; all materials used on the jail house and funds for clean-ups have been donated.
