Who We Are
One Eleuthera is a nonprofit development organization incorporated in the Commonwealth of the Bahamas. Led by a committed Board of Directors, OE was founded to identify and invest in unique, high-quality projects that strengthen Eleuthera’s communities and further the economic, environmental, and social development of the island. We represent a gathering of professionals and organizations that share a commitment to a future that is built on the responsible development of our island’s many assets.
Our Vision
We envision an Eleuthera which is built on our rich cultural assets and an economy that is organic and built on sustainable principles, and which includes the development of the talents of our citizenry. We recognize that Eleuthera has a unique opportunity to create an economy based on our unique heritage and sustainable/green practices that protect our cultural and physical environment. Realizing this opportunity requires strategic planning to move beyond a fragmented approach to development by constructing a development framework that harnesses the natural and relevant links among communities and projects, as well as frequently monitor and evaluate projects to measure success, manage change, and address any implementation challenges. The role of the One Eleuthera Foundation is to contribute to this coherent approach and help fill the gaps with information, money, and expertise through being an essential catalyst that brings together people, resources, and technical know-how to find, develop, or expand the types of projects and activities that will enable Eleuthera to truly prosper.
Our Priorities
We will make catalytic investments in projects and programs that strengthen Eleuthera’s individual communities and further the economic, environmental, and social development of the island.
- We will rely on traditional approaches and new communications technologies to build stronger connections among Eleuthera’s settlements.
- We will lead local efforts to brand Eleuthera as a cultural and heritage tourism destination.
- We will advocate for and support high-quality planning that creates guidelines for the future sustainable development of the island and its economy.
How We Work
One Eleuthera Foundation is rapidly establishing an organizational infrastructure to realize its vision. Organizationally, it is managed by a board of directors drawn from the business community, nonprofit sector, and second homeowner community. One Eleuthera believes deeply in working collaboratively and expects to advance its goals through partnerships with local and central government officials and organizations such as Chambers of Commerce, Rotary and service clubs, local businesses, international development organizations and other established nonprofits on the island.
Fundraising is now underway to secure the resources needed for an endowment fund to be used to make grant and loan investments in selected projects and to cover annual operating costs of a small administrative staff.
How We Started
The One Eleuthera Foundation is an organic coming together of different community actors and organizations that have recognized the island's challenges, opportunities, and assets and have committed to developing a comprehensive, sustainable plan for Eleuthera.
